The Citizen: Tosa Washi Dial

Ancient Japanese traditions and the latest technology, all distilled into one dial.

Tengu-jo, an ultra-thin washi from Tosa. Platinum leaf of legendary quality from Kanazawa. Sunago-maki, a decorative technique from the lacquerware workshops of Aizu-Wakamatsu, in which shredded platinum leaf is sprinkled from a tubular sieve onto washi paper. This genuinely one-of-a-kind dial combines traditional materials and techniques from different regions of Japan with CITIZEN’s advanced watchmaking technology as exemplified by Eco-Drive. It is a collaboration between Hidakawashi in Kochi Prefecture, which made the ultra-thin washi paper for the dial, and URUSHI SAKAMOTO, a long-established lacquerware workshop in Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture, which applied the platinum leaf.

A lavish sprinkling of platinum leaf that still lets enough light through.

A “sprinkling of fluffy snowflakes” is the concept behind the platinum leaf decoration. The dials of Eco-Drive watches have to be light permeable because Eco-Drive runs by converting light into energy. When decorating the dial with a generous sprinkling of platinum “snowflakes,” great care was taken to create a refined and sophisticated design while also maintaining the appropriate light-transmittance level. Produced through a fusion of natural materials and supreme artisanal skill, each of the 500 dials is truly unique.
